Disclosure: We are proud to partner with Dove Men+Care for its #ThereToCare campaign.
“Who was #ThereToCare for you?”
That’s the tagline to this year’s annual Father’s Day campaign by Dove Men+Care grooming products, a frequent partner of ours at City Dads Group. The question aims to put the focus not just on fathers but on men who served as father figures to others.
“Dove Men+Care also wants to acknowledge the other men who have stepped in to care for the next generation. From grandfathers to uncles, to teachers and coaches, there are many men to thank for their roles in shaping us,” the brand states on its website.
Here’s the campaign’s 30-second ad spot:
One of our own dad’s father-figure stories in particular grabbed Dove Men+Care’s attention enough to feature it in its national campaign.
NYC Dads Group member Christopher Persley and his relationship with Billy McBride, a school coach who filled the shoes of Persley’s absentee father, is not only highlighted on a special Father’s Day section of the Dove Men+Care website but also on in-store displays set up in drugstores around the nation.
“Perhaps the biggest impact he had on me was the career I chose. I decided to pursue a career in education at the same school due in large part to Coach. Seeing a black man as a leader and role model in a school community let me know that I could (and should) do it, too,” Persley wrote on his website, The Brown Gothamite.
Here’s a few of the #ThereToCare social media postings that City Dads around have created in the past week to honor father figures in their lives:
I'm joining @dovemencare in celebrating all men who where #ThereToCare during our lives – not just our own fathers. This is one of my favorite pictures because it's of all three living generations of De Guia men, taken in the early 1990s at my grandpa's property in McCloud, California. My grandfather has always been a hard working man and during the sporadic pockets of time we spent together one-on-one, he taught me things like gun safety, how to organize tools, how to chop and stack firewood, and many other things. At the time, I thought he was just being mean by making me do chores but as I got older, I realized he was teaching me something much more important: The value of hard work. Now, as a man in his late 80s, this Korean War Veteran has just beaten cancer, still works doing appliance repair, and continues to work hard and take care of others around him. He's been a constant role model for hard work and integrity. From left in picture: My grandpa, myself, and my dad.
As Father's Day approaches let's also look beyond the traditional and recognize father figures in your life that have made a lasting impact. Love this guy right here who has been a mentor in my life. Grateful for my guy Goody! I'm grateful to be teaming up again with @dovemencare to spread the word. This Father's Day, I'm partnering with @dovemencare a company that always does a great job celebrating dads. This year they are focusing on non-biological fathers for the #ThereToCare Father's Day campaign. In addition to my dad, there are so many men that have positively influenced me throughout my life. Two that come to mind are my father-in-law and my stepdad. These two guys helped me grow up, taught me about work, and gave me spiritual and financial advice. I am truly grateful for both of them. Thanks Jim and Dave.
I partnered with @dovemencare for their Father’s Day celebration of not just dads, but also the father figures in our lives. I define “father figure” as someone who isn’t my dad, but who had a profound influence on the man / father I am today. I can think of no one more fitting than my husband, Nick Pirulli. 👬 In the nearly 20 years we’ve been together, I’ve learned so much from his determination, generosity, patience & loyalty. 👨❤️👨 Though we have our dads and other relatives to look to for examples of fatherhood, we’ve really only had each other as we’ve navigated this challenging, uncharted journey to becoming dads. 👨👨👦 Our son is so lucky to have you as his Papa, and I’m so lucky to have you as my husband, co-dad, and best friend. ❤️ Happy Father’s Day! #ThereToCare #fathersday #gaydads #gaydad #adoption #loveislove #pride @citydadsgroup (photo: 12/31/97, Buzz, Nation, DC)
Not all father figures are biological. The #ThereToCare campaign by @DoveMenCare is celebrating the father figures in our lives that might not be related by blood. This hat and jacket belonged to my step-dad. He passed away a few years ago, but his lessons still hold firm in my heart. His hat and jacket look ready to be tossed on to cut some wood or other outdoor activity. The love he showed my family and more importantly, my mom is what I hope to pass on to others. He loved all and worked hard for all with a gentle and caring attitude. Just what this world could use more of was taken away. This Father's Day, I hope a caring movement begins to love and care for others. #CityDads #Fatherhood #DoveMenDads #dads #stepdads #love #fathersday @citydadsgroup @nycdadsgroup
This Father's Day I am partnering with @dovemencare to honor the father figures in our lives. These two men, my step-father-in-law and my grandfather-in-law have been two of the most influential father figures in my life. Not only have they helped me with projects around the house that I had no clue how to fix, but they have been there for me during some of the darkest times in my life. Just recently they both told me, "whatever you need, you let us know, we are family." That is called being #theretocare
