My wife & I just got back from a vacation with our 11 month old son. It was much easier than I expected. We decided to plan an affordable vacation that was within a few hours drive so we headed to Montauk. We stayed at a hotel that felt more like a condo unit because it included a full kitchen (necessary to make your life easier with kids), 2nd bathroom (my wife’s wish), and a terrace (my request). Basically, it met all of our needs.
We overpacked in a big way – but, so what! We were spoiled because we were taking the car and did not have to worry about luggage weight restrictions or number of bags. Basically, there was no extra cube space in the car because we took everything for our son from our apartment.
One suggestion I have for other parents going on a long drive for vacation or just visiting family -leave during your child’s nap time. Our son napped the entire two hours until we stopped for lunch along the way in East Hampton. It made the trip smooth and uneventful (no crying or fussy baby). We used this same approach on the way home with success.
As parents, I knew that our vacation would only be amazing as long as our son was happy. We kept him on his normal nap and feeding schedules and he was a rock star. The highlight for us was to have a terrace. My wife & I spent a lot of quality time together: outside on the terrace catching some rays during the day while our son was inside napping or eating dinner & having drinks at night when he was asleep for the night. Bring your baby monitor!
You do not have to fly somewhere to be on vacation during the summer. Hop in the car & take advantage of some amazing places that you can get to in a few hours – Berkshires, Vermont, Jersey Shore, Cape Cod, Montauk, and more…
