It was with great anticipation that Jonah and I went to the Foxwoods Theatre today to see the Broadway show, “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.” Jonah is almost 4, entering Universal Pre-K, and is absolutely consumed with all things surrounding Spider-man and other superheroes, and how they always Save the Day from the villains. He has also been anxiously awaiting his first Broadway show — and what a super way to start seeing shows on the Great White Way. We met up with several other members of the NYC Dads Group community as we settled in for a matinee performance as part of the show’s recent “SuperHero Dads Campaign.”
As we were walking to the theater, he posed in front of the poster with his Spider-man shirt on. Spider-man, the great arachnid himself, shook his hand when we went inside and approached our seats. Then, the curtains came up to reveal Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson for the first time. As they sang, and Norman Osbourne turned into the Green Goblin, and even played piano, Jonah could hardly contain his excitement.
The superhero soared through the audience and we could almost, literally, reach out and touch him from our spectacular “Flying Circle” seats. The music totally rocked and, in fact, it felt like we were attending a rock concert. Jonah, and his seatmate, Miles were singing and spinning their own webs as they both caught the Spider-man fever of the show.
As Spider-man fought the villain, Saved the Day, and got the girl, we were also tangled in the web that Spider-man spun throughout the audience. Once we escaped the web and clapped our way through the final scene (which was incredible), we realized what a great decision it was to see the show Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark. Because, “with great powers comes great responsibilities.”
One additional note on Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark: we thought it was a wonderful idea to distribute FREE Spider-Man backpacks to all of the children attending the show as they gear up for the new school-year.
DISCLOSURE: NYC Dads Group were given free tickets to attend “Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark” and write about the performance. The free tickets has not affected our opinion of the show.
