What does it take to be a hero? If you look around at the media today you get an unrealistic take on what masculinity and strength is. If you start asking men though you begin to get a different picture, most men believe that having a child changes the way they think about what it means to be a man. Seven out of 10 men believe that things like putting others’ needs before their own are signs of real modern day heroism. Our group of actively engaged fathers here in Chicago couldn’t agree more. For example , the Chicago Dads Group has a large population of Stay-at-home-dads who are choosing to put their careers on hold to give their kids the best foot forward in life. We also have dads that are finding ways to work around their kids schedules so that they can actively participate in being part of their children’s lives as well as being a financial provider. Whatever the individual situation our dads love their kids and they love that their roles in their children’s lives are redefining what masculinity, strength, and being a hero means.
Heroes Are Measured By Their Capacity to Care, Not the Size of Their Cape
As we strive to promote the message of a positive role for fathers and present a compelling argument for the evolving definition of “manhood”, we are proud to be connect with brands like Dove Men+Care. This year just in time for Father’s Day the good folks over at Dove Men+Care have put together a video (above) featuring footage from real dads’ lives titled “My Dad, My Hero”. The film is a highlight reel of fathers showing how they are expanding the definition by showing how dads’ extraordinary care elevates them to hero status in the eyes of their children.
Taking it a step further, Dove Men+Care is putting its money where its mouth is by continuing its “Dad Care Package” program for the second year. They equip dads with skin, face, hair and deodorant products, along with a “welcome letter” in the delivery room to show their support of men as they take those first amazing steps into the challenging and rewarding world of fatherhood. This year, Dove Men+Care is expanding its network of hospitals and distributing “Dad Care Packages” to 15,000 dads across the country and we aplaud their effort.
Fatherhood is a wonderful experience. We love the opportunity we have to watch our children learn, grow, and thrive. We recognize that our role as dads is a critical part of our children’s success. We love our children and we our glad to be connected with so many others who share our passion for fatherhood.
