Vernon Gibbs Wants ‘Good Fruit’ to Help End Bad Nutrition Habits

March 29, 2021 by Kevin McKeever

Vernon D. Gibbs II dreamed about writing a children’s book for a long time. Amid all the pandemic and personal chaos of 2020, his dream came to fruition, so to speak.

The married stay-at-home father of three discusses all that went into creating When Good Fruit Goes Bad, his experiences dealing with a miscarriage and witnessing the birth of his twins by C-section, and lots more on the latest edition of The Modern Dads Podcast.

Gibbs is interviewed by Cincinnati Dads Group founder Brock Lusch, who hosted the author on his NOMADad Podcast. Lusch recently started a second podcast, Home Dad Chat for The National At-Home Dad Network.

Gibbs, who is also a contributor to our City Dads Group blog, conceived the idea for When Good Fruit Goes Bad following a conversation with one of his kids who want to toss a banana that looked a little too ripe. The result, in collaboration with his cousin Steven T. Gray, is a 36-page illustrated adventure focusing on grocer Hank Huckleberry, who loves to sell fresh fruits and veggies. When some of his past-its-prime fruit rebel and take over his store, Hank needs to find a way to make all right again.

Gibbs has been aggressively marketing the book, creating companion videos for his YouTube channel and a comprehensive teaching guide to help adults share the story’s lessons even after the cover has been closed.

Gibbs, a New Jersey resident, has an architecture degree from Columbia University, and had worked for a variety of companies including the NBA and his alma mater. In addition to City Dads, he writes for Families of Multiples; his own blog, Cool Minivan Dad; and has been published in the Washington Post.
