It’s no secret that I am having a great time raising my kids in New York City. We could have spent every day this summer exploring a new neighborhood, a new park, a new museum, and we’d only scratch the surface of family opportunities across the five boroughs.
I also love New York City because there are so many creative people reinventing the ways we play. Last week, our friend Anna, the mommy behind Mommy Poppins, invited my 6-year-old son and I to experience something totally new– an adventure gym called Exerblast that “combines the power of gaming technology with a real world obstacle course to create a heart-pounding adventure.”
Basically, Exerblast is a way for families to exercise together in an engaging environment. Families are led through a series of tests and obstacles by an Exerblast trainer and an iPod app that is directing and measuring our movement. With every step and every touch, we had the opportunity to earn points.
My son and I really enjoyed every twist and turn, and in the end, my 6-year-old outscored me by several hundred points– it pays to have short legs in this game.
For now, this experience is best suited to older kids, five and above, but the Exerblast team told me they are developing a program for younger kids that should launch later this year. Very much looking forward to organizing a Meetup in this space and very much looking forward to going back again with my son.
Check out the Time Out New York Kids ExerBlast write-up:
“The workout Tribeca’s new adventure gym does Wii and Kinect one better, melding video-game story lines with obstacle course challenges, including a revolving rock wall, a light-sensor-equipped jungle gym, dance games and a field of core-strengthening fitness balls. Individual monitors even measure step counts, time, distance and calories burned. Kids will have so much fun trying to save the virtual planet Botania from losing its Xi energy that they’ll hardly realize they’re getting a serious workout.
Sweat factor 4/4”
