‘America’s Fathers’ Report Author on Tale of Two Dads

October 31, 2016 by Matt Schneider

state of america's fathers report 2016

We have heard before about there being two different Americas. The tale is true for fathers in the United States.

The 2016 State of America’s Fathers report found that while dads, in general, are more active in their children’s lives than ever, increasing the time they spend with their children and sharing child care responsibilities with women at all-time high levels, the disparity between the classes is still great. High-income fathers receive kudos while dads of lesser means are “often either valued or stigmatized simply by their ability to pay their way.”

State of America’s Fathers report author Brian Heilman joins us on the latest Modern Dads Podcast to talk about the status of American dads in 2016. We discuss the differing challenges white collar, college educated dads are facing compared to less educated, lower income fathers. We also look at the impact of a dad’s increased involvement on his children, his partner and himself.

The Parents’ Phrase Book author Whit Honea, a member of our L.A. Dads Group, joins us with a conversation he recorded with his son about the state of fathers in their Los Angeles suburb.

The State of America’s Fathers report is sponsored by MenCare and Promundo-US. MenCare is a global fatherhood campaign active in more than 40 countries on five continents. Its mission is to promote men’s involvement as equitable, nonviolent fathers and caregivers in order to achieve family well-being, gender equality, and better health for mothers, fathers, and children. We aim for men to be allies in supporting women’s social and economic equality, in part by taking on more responsibility for childcare and domestic work. Promundo is a global leader in promoting gender justice and preventing violence by engaging men and boys in partnership with women and girls.
