As involved Dads, whether we are working full-time, or able to be at home part-time or full-time, it is time that we add our voice to the discussion about how to balance work and family. For too long, issues like parental leave, flexible work, and affordable childcare have been framed as “women’s issues.” It has been well documented in the press that fathers want to spend more time with their families, and our group of close to 300 fathers is certainly a testament to outside the box thinking on how to make that happen.
To kick things off, I will be participating in an event at Columbia Law School that will attempt to reframe the work/family debate. This evening discussion will start with a lecture by Professor Joan Williams, a “rock-star” in the field. She will show how adding men and class to the discussion is the key to true work-family balance. The lecture will be followed by a candid panel discussion on men and the need for workplace flexibility. Panelists include: Eric Berger, Deloitte & Touche, Gary Phelan, Esq., Cohen & Wolf, PC, Daniel Hekman, Administration for Children and Families, and yours truly representing the NYC Dads Group.
