Puppy Love at Two Years Old

April 20, 2010 by City Dads Group

My little guy is almost two. On numerous occasions I joke with other parent friends (of little girls) as our kids are holding hands or getting a little too close for comfort that it’s love at an early age. Or they “make a nice pair!” Case in point – Lover boy playing it cool in above picture. For this reason, Chatting up the Trophy Girl, Toddler Style by Albert Stern (a Brooklyn Dad) captured my interest over the weekend as I was enjoying the NY Times Sunday Styles Section. Maybe it’s because I am known to like some chick flicks and it reads like one…or maybe the competitor in me was rooting for the underdog. Either way, it’s a quick and entertaining read that puts a smile on your face. A couple of excerpts below to hook you.

“I knew that look and that move — every man does. Eliot (2-years old) had the girl’s (3-years old) attention. Eliot liked the girl’s attention. But Eliot didn’t know what to do with the girl’s attention, and so he had lost it. Now, he wanted her attention back, but didn’t know how to get it. So he reused the “A” material, the lively repartee that had clicked, the nanas (referring to Banana) in the morning. It was his best stuff, but it wasn’t working…Suddenly, I felt all paternal and wanted to share some of the hard-won male insight I had acquired — “Son, play it cool,” I wanted to tell him. “Don’t try too hard, let her come to you … let her come to you.”

Well, little Eliot could not close the deal:
I wanted to pick Eliot up and console him, though I wasn’t sure what “She’s just not that into you” might mean to a 2-year-old.”
