Paid family leave, especially for fathers, is an issue close to our hearts at NYC Dads Group. That’s why we are proud to announce that, as the flagship chapter of the City Dads Group network, we have joined forces with New York Paid Leave Coalition and our longtime sponsor Dove Men+Care to put together a June 6 panel discussion on the importance of businesses offering paid paternity leave options to their employees.
The discussion, slated for 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the Weill Music Room at Carnegie Hall, 154 W. 57th St., is part of a larger effort between City Dads Group and Dove Men+Care to promote paid family leave across the country in 2018.
Wednesday’s event will explore the societal barriers fathers face concerning paid leave in the United States and the many ways our families, communities and workplaces benefit when more dads take time to care for their children. The event will feature panelists:
- Scott Behson, a management professor, author of The Working Dad’s Survival Guide, and a NYC Dads Group member.
- Jessica DeGroot, founder and president of the ThirdPath Institute, a nonprofit organization that assists individuals, families and organizations in finding new ways to redesign work to create time for families and other life priorities.
- Dr. Wizdom Powell, a male health and masculinity expert who is the director of the Health Disparities Institute at University of Connecticut
Former journalist and paternity leave expert Josh Levs, author of All In: How Our Work-First Culture Fails Dads, Families, and Businesses — and How We Can Fix It Together, will serve as the panel moderator.
Holding the event in New York is apropos since this year a new state law made most of the 6.4 million people who work for private employers in New York state eligible for paid family leave. Qualified employees in New York can now take up to eight weeks a year of paid leave at half their average weekly wage (up to $652).
The Carnegie Hall event is part of a larger Dove Men+Care and City Dads Group effort to further the paid family leave cause. One part of the partnership will include 50 dads who are members of the City Dads Group support and social network posting their “time to care” stories on their social media channels. You can follow those stories at #DearFutureDads on Instagram.
Limited space is available for this free event. To sign up, NYC Dads Group members should first RSVP via our Meetup page for the event. Then, they should also email DMCPanelRSVP@edelman.com to be added to the list for entry.
