So we did it. We finally got ourselves a king-size mattress. Unfortunately, we also got ourselves a kid. My son was always a good sleeper. We cried it out, he got the point, and from a few months in, he was sleeping through the night pretty consistently. There have been speed bumps, but nothing out of the ordinary. So when we converted his crib to a bed we foolishly told him he could get out of it when he woke up, rather than sit there and scream our names for 30 minutes. Not the best idea. My son hit the 11-week mark yesterday. The bigger news is that he hit the 13-pound mark a few weeks ago. At that weight, our pediatrician said, the boy would be perfectly capable of sleeping through the night without feeding. “Twelve hours. I know it sounds tough,” she said, “and it is, but you have to establish the routine.” Apparently my son needs to learn to soothe and sedate himself, even if it means crying himself hoarse, and it won’t be until he gets to college that he’ll learn all the fun ways to do that! Every two weeks our daycare hosts a movie night on Fridays for any younger children in the neighborhood. A few hours of fun for the kids, and some well deserved together time (and time off) for parents. Every two weeks we use these nights as incentive for Olivia to get up in the mornings without fussing or fighting. Every two weeks she is *this* close to not going because she is adamantly, overwhelmingly and undeniably not a morning person.
