NYC Dads and Kids Graze at The Farm

March 30, 2010 by City Dads Group

Our latest guest blog entry, is from Gilbert R., who describes his experience with his daughter and the dads group at The Art Farm in the City…

It was a Wednesday in March, as Sage (my 7-month old daughter) & I made our way to 419 E. 91st Street. Not knowing what to expect for this dads group meet up event, and questioning the name of the facility, The Art Farm In The City? We were pleasantly surprised to what we discovered. We arrived just before the start of the class, about the 4th dad & child team. We were all welcomed by the facility Manager & staff, given a briefing as to how the day was set up, & the things that we would experience during our time there.

We did the standard practice of taking our shoes off & leaving our bags, strollers, etc in the designated area. Then, made our way to the play/music room, there all of the Dads & their little ones got into a circle formation. The room had very colorful & bright murals on the walls – comfortable and interesting for our little one’s eyes. Then the Fun began, we had continual music being played by the staff’s’ musician. ( I must say he was a talented guitar player.)
While the music played, we all sang songs (picture above by Jared M.). That’s right – dads sing too! The little ones also joined in the fun by playing various instruments provided. We then engaged in play time, (using balls, nylon scarfs, etc.) and exercise time. Normally they would involve the children in an Art class (unfortunately, time did not permit on this visit) We finished off our time in the room with a visit from Ginger the Guinea pig, a daily animal chosen from their Indoor Petting Zoo to interact with the children.
I think this was a highlight for the little one’s, as it sure was for Sage & I. As the only interactions she’s had with animals, is her Uncle’s Jack Russell Rusty. She showed such care when petting Ginger.

After all of this excitement, the staff still had 1 trick up their sleeves. Their very own Indoor Petting Zoo, located in the lower floor of the building. We were impressed with their set up & the number of different animals they offered – birds, fish, bunny rabbits, iguanas, turtles, and the like. The children loved interacting with the animals!
Even though Sage was only 7 months old during her visit, she had a blast. I look forward to our next visit, especially since my little one will be older & can appreciate everything even more. I would recommend visiting The Art Farm In The City – they also offer a drop-in class. Great option for quality time with you & the little one’s during good or bad weather.
