New Year’s Parenting Resolutions

January 2, 2014 by City Dads Group

Editor’s Note: Do you have any New Year’s resolutions relating to your parenting duties in 2014? Tell them to us in the comments. Meanwhile, here’s what a few of our contributing NYC Dads plan to work on in the New Year.
In 2014, I resolve to be more present in real life and to be more focused on my goals.
— Niel Vuolo, Great Moments in Bad Parenting
My New Years resolution for 2014 is a very simple. I plan on enjoying my mornings. Of course that is quite easy for one to say, and even easier for one to write. However, putting it into practice during those cold dark mornings in February, long after the warm bubbles of hope that New Year’s Eve brings, will be the real challenge. But we must not give up hope! Knowing that these resolutions are in fact probably a good thing. Getting up early, before the impending storm that is the morning hustle, and enjoying that cup of coffee before becoming dad for the day. Yup, 2014, I’ve got big plans for you, and it all begins in the morning.
— Byran Grossbauer, Red Wagon Stories
A family that runs together, stays fit together. To my complete dismay (I hate running), my daughter recently requested that Daddy come running with her and Mommy. “Let’s go running as a family!” she said. So with my 20-month-old in tow in a stroller, the Sharma family will run together in 2014.  Our plan to stay fit and teach out girls to love being fit too.

I stopped making New Year’s resolutions a few years ago because I never kept them. Mostly because I had planned on getting in better shape than the previous year. This year though I’m making a resolution and must keep it for my family’s sake. I recently had a health scare that caused to me think about taking better care of myself. We parents are always watching over our families and helping them to make wise and healthy decisions, but neglect our own. With the love of my family at the forefront of my mind, I have decided that I must live a healthier lifestyle full of exercise and nutritious meals. This will hopefully be a year of a healthier me.

— Jason Greene, One Good Dad

My parenting New Year’s resolution is to model better digital behavior for my kid. I write about this stuff all the time, but I need to practice what I preach even more. I can’t expect him to limit his screen time and not obsess over the Wii and Minecraft if I’ve got my fingers glued to my phone and am re-watching The Shield on Amazon Prime (totally worth it by the way!)
— Adam Gertsacov, Dadapalooza, Digital Family Summit

A few months ago I came across a video titled “Move” on the website for the outdoor apparel company Arc’teryx. Around the same time I saw this video I was in the midst of changing my lifestyle and the video confirmed I was chasing the right goal. I want to be here for my son and I want him to be around an outdoor lifestyle. For that to happen I needed to realize I am not Charles Bukowski but I can try my best to be Peter Pan as I snowboard and swim toward a healthy lifestyle.
