Talking is Teaching: Talk, Read, Sing and Our Day at the Dodger Game

October 2, 2017 by Eli Lipmen Leave a Comment

“F — O — X…what does that spell?” asked my daughter as she looked out the window at signs along the freeway on the way to the Dodgers game.

My daughter’s interest in reading came from parents. My wife and I have been talking, reading, and singing to our three kids practically since the day we learned we were pregnant. We found a Dr. Seuss book to read while “in utero” and it became a nightly ritual. When our youngest was born, he turned towards … [Read more...]

Why Los Angeles, besides the weather?

LA beach with kids

I have been living in Los Angeles for 12+ years now. I left Seattle not only to avoid the overcast, dreary days but to chase an opportunity. There are a few things I miss about Seattle, but I especially don’t miss the weather. LA has provided me with more than I could have imagined. I met my amazing wife and we had two incredible boys. My wife and I cannot think of a better place that we would want to live and raise our boys. Why Los Angeles, besides the weather? In Los Angeles, we can find anything we want and we can find things we didn’t even know we wanted. We can see concerts large and … [Read more...]

A letter to my son: sometimes the best gift is watching you grow up

September 8, 2017 by Joel Leoj Leave a Comment

I will never forget the day you decided to change the way you address me. Yes you're getting older. I'm dad. Not daddy. Daddy J was short lived. All of those references to me I love. You're maturing. I remembered in that moment when you said, "I'm going to call you Dad now. Okay." It wasn't a question of permission. It was a statement. You were putting your 'Dad' on notice of how you would address him. You just know yourself. That's great! I also remembered every milestone in your life since you entered my life. You cried the whole first evening/night and awoke hungry. You ate half a dozen … [Read more...]

Missing the Moment: Dad Lessons in Camera Operation (Video)

July 7, 2017 by Eli Lipmen Leave a Comment

Has your kid done something extraordinary (like, all the time!) and you whip out your phone or camera, only to miss it by a few seconds? Well, it happens to us all the time! This time, however, we actually caught one of our L.A. Dads Group co-organizers Juan Pablo on camera trying to film his son's first attempt at surfing. We won't give away the hilarious story...but the moral of the story might just be that we should all just "be in the moment" with our kids a little bit more often, rather than watching our kids through our phone or our camera. Whatever you do, first enjoy our short film … [Read more...]

L.A. Dads featured in TODAY Parents video for Father’s Day

June 16, 2017 by Eli Lipmen Leave a Comment

A couple of our local dads were featured in a video on dads by TODAY Parents for Father's Day. Thanks to Doyin Richards for putting all the pieces today. We strive to raise our children to the best of our abilities, no matter what others may say. And we had such a great time playing in the park and working on the video. We hope you enjoy and share it! https://www.facebook.com/todayparents/videos/10154763966377984/ … [Read more...]

Marching for science (and our kids)

April 26, 2017 by Eli Lipmen Leave a Comment

Earth Day was April 22nd, and as an environmentalist and son of a scientist, our family fully embraced the day of marches in support of science. Our first step in celebrating Mother Earth was to pick up an all-electric vanpool car, a Tesla X, from Green Commuter. I found out about this amazing company when they launched last year and came to Los Angeles. They rent out the Tesla X, the all-electric SUV version of the popular Tesla car, to riders by the hour, day, or weekend. This is great for two reasons: 1) our family of four (about to be five) only has one car and sometimes (especially on … [Read more...]

Why does safety matter?

April 25, 2017 by Trevor Mulligan Leave a Comment

We were invited by Britax to join them at Safe Kids Day, a family-friendly event to benefit the life-saving programs of Safe Kids Worldwide. Why is Safe Kids Worldwide so important? FACT: PREVENTABLE INJURIES ARE THE #1 KILLER OF U.S. KIDS Saving lives is a decision we can all make every day. Safe Kids Worldwide is a global organization dedicated to protecting kids from unintentional injuries, the number one cause of death to children in the United States. Throughout the world, almost 1 million children die of injuries each year. That is all we needed to hear, we are thankful to … [Read more...]

Return of the 90s

April 12, 2017 by Joel Leoj Leave a Comment

Families, fun and the 90s. That was the scene for the PopTv red carpet event for Hollywood Darlings and Return of the Mac. Both shows premiere today April 12th on PopTv. Visit http://www.poptv.com to find your local listing channel and time. Read along for some insider details about the cast and the shows. It was a star studded evening. The first show that debuts tonight is Hollywood Darlings. Pop's new original comedy series turns the camera on real-life friends, which I learned they are all moms with different perspectives. These women who are former child stars grew up in the … [Read more...]
