Very interesting article in yesterday’s USA Today, Shade: A weapon against skin cancer, childhood obesity, by Liz Szabo. She highlights a problem that all NYC parents deal with on a regular basis– a lack of shade at our parks and playgrounds. Beautiful new playgrounds have been built at West Thames Park in Battery Park City, Union Square Park, and Brooklyn Bridge Park, but for the foreseeable future, these parks have very little shade. Liz makes the obvious connection to a higher exposure to skin cancer, but she also recognizes that lack of shade could be connected to a higher incidence of childhood obesity– if kids can’t play at the playground, they’re likely at home playing video games or some other sedentary activity.
Definitely worth the read, and thanks to Liz Szabo for including comments from Lance and a mention of the NYC Dads Group!
