The DFW Sports Scene Beyond the Majors

September 6, 2017 by Jeff Tepper Leave a Comment

Dr. Pepper Ballpark, home of the Frisco RoughRiders

September 6th 2017 Note: I've updated this post to include my own experiences with four teams; the Texas Marshals, the Texas Legends, the Dallas Wings, and the Dallas Sidekicks, as well as the annual Frisco College Baseball Classic. I also want to highlight the benefits of getting Pogo Pass*, which gets you into several RoughRiders, Wings, Legends, and Revolution games each year, as well as many other DFW area family attractions. If you go to more than one game a year, the pass will be very cost effective for your family. If you're a sports fan like me, you're probably also raising your … [Read more...]

Super Times at Sci-Tech!

February 13, 2017 by Jeff Tepper Leave a Comment

A little girl blowing a huge bubble.

Housed in an industrial building that looks ordinary from the outside is the not at all ordinary Sci-Tech Discovery Center in Frisco.  The museum has both full-time features and seasonal exhibits that rotate every few months.  Parking is free, and the cost is very reasonable at $8 for those 3-64, with discounts for seniors, teachers, and military personnel.  Family memberships are also available. On Saturday February 4th, seven dads from Dallas Dads Group took our kids to spend about two hours at Sci-Tech learning and playing. It's a Nano World! The special feature exhibit on display was … [Read more...]

Pogo Pass: A Great Way to Save On Family Outings.

Some of the Pogo Pass venues.

Editor's Note: This post has been edited to reflect the new reduced price of just 39.98 for Pogo Pass.  They have also added three new venues, Amazing Jakes, the Texas Legends basketball team, and North Texas Outdoor Pursuit Center (Rock climbing!).  Note: Dallas Dads Group is an affiliate of Pogo Pass and received three complimentary passes in order to test the program and ensure it works how it is advertised.  The opinions expressed here are my own.  When you organize a dads group, you get people reaching out to you to try and get you to hawk stuff to your members.  We’ve gotten … [Read more...]

Venue Review: National Videogame Museum

Huge Pong game at the NVGM

Dallas Dads Group celebrated Fathers Eve 2016 at the National Videogame Museum. From the moment you enter you are thrust into the community of gaming. Located in the Frisco Discovery Center, it is easy to reach just off the Dallas North Tollway. The museum foyer boasts artwork with screens streaming pop culture and gaming footage to try and prepare you for the nostalgia overload that awaits. Once you enter, you learn about the early stages of gaming. A can't miss is a round of Pong on the world's largest, 15-foot 1970's home Pong console. The timeline of consoles is a great way to see … [Read more...]

Frisco RoughRiders Review: Our Outing at Dr. Pepper Ballpark

May 10, 2016 by Jeff Tepper Leave a Comment

The scene one hour before a RoughRiders game each Sunday.

We wrote previously that you don't need to go out to a major league sporting event to have a major league good time with your kids.  Our recent outing to see the Frisco RoughRiders is a case in point of this.  On Sunday, May 1st we met up at the ballpark for a day that all of us, big and little, enjoyed thoroughly. Sundays are a great day to head to Dr. Pepper Ballpark.  Before the game, the team allows fans to go onto the field to play catch.  This is just one of the cool promotions they offer.  Kids get to run the bases after the game as well, except on nights when the team will be doing … [Read more...]

Klyde Warren Park at a glance.

Downtown Dallas features a true gem for families to visit. Klyde Warren Park has quickly become the place to meet up for all ages. It features 4 large lawn spaces, walking trails, a performance pavilion, children's park, restaurants, food trucks, dog area, and classic games you can borrow. Dallas Dads Group holds a MeetUp on the second Wednesday of each month in the Children's Park. Located above Woodall Rogers Freeway, the park is easily accessible for anyone in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex by car. Valet parking is $15 and metered parking is also available for $4/2 hours. … [Read more...]

5 Reasons to Love the DFW Family Expo

March 29, 2016 by David Kepley 2 Comments

DFW Family Expo

Editor's note: for 2017 the door price for the Expo is $6. The advance ticket price remains $5. As a parent of two young boys, I am always looking for fun things to take them to, that won't bore me to tears and require a second mortgage. Last year I went to the DFW Family Expo and the question I always get is, "Is it worth it?" I can't blame people. Given the choice between walking on hot coals while listening to mix-tape of nails on a chalkboard and Paula Abdul's greatest hits for a week, or a drama-filled day trip with my kids, I'd say hand me the headphones. What parent wants … [Read more...]

Venue Review: Dallas Zoo

Dallas Zoo Review

Located 10 minutes south of downtown, the Dallas Zoo has over 2,000 species throughout 100 acres. Founded in 1888, the zoo has a classic feel with modern exhibits for the entire family. Major exhibits include the Wilds of Africa, Giants of the Savanna, and a Children's Zoo. Dallas Dads Group's MeetUp at the Zoo occurs on the fourth Wednesday of each month. Upon entering the zoo, you're greeted by a charming carousel and the gift shop for stroller rental. Hanging a left, you head through a tunnel and into the Wilds of Africa area. This exhibit explores the six African ecosystems and features … [Read more...]

Venue Review: Kid Mania!

February 9, 2016 by Jeff Tepper Leave a Comment

Dallas Dads Group at Kid Mania

One thing we can certainly say about Kid Mania in Plano is that it is accurately named.  The main attraction is the gigantic play structure, consisting of colorful padded and netted components formed together to create a huge maze that extends high and wide. Within the climbing structure are slides, zip lines, trampolines, swings, and other obstacles. They have a separate area for smaller kids, so there's no worry that your toddler will get trampled by bigger kids. We like to meet up there several times a year, particularly in the winter and summer when it's too cold or hot to be … [Read more...]
