Venue Review: Dallas Zoo

March 21, 2016 by Anton Jacobs

Located 10 minutes south of downtown, the Dallas Zoo has over 2,000 species throughout 100 acres. Founded in 1888, the zoo has a classic feel with modern exhibits for the entire family. Major exhibits include the Wilds of Africa, Giants of the Savanna, and a Children’s Zoo. Dallas Dads Group’s MeetUp at the Zoo occurs on the fourth Wednesday of each month.

Upon entering the zoo, you’re greeted by a charming carousel and the gift shop for stroller rental. Hanging a left, you head through a tunnel and into the Wilds of Africa area. This exhibit explores the six African ecosystems and features animals including penguins, gorillas, chimpanzees, and crocodiles. The BIG attraction is the Giants of the Savanna area. Lions, cheetahs, elephants, and giraffes are the main attractions. Be sure to catch the Zoo Keeper talks and Predator Encounters!

The ZooNorth section has more of the classic zoo feel. A centralized pavilion and picnic area is surrounded by animal exhibits. Up the hill, you will find the reptile house near another picnic area where a small train rides around. This area is where you’ll find the zoo’s special exhibits. Currently featured is the Nature Connects LEGO brick exhibit with 16 statues. Anyone who played with LEGOs as a kid will stare in awe at the intricacies of each model.

Following up a path with several small bronze animals, you enter the Children’s Zoo. There are areas for children of all ages to explore. The Discovery house has learning stations and sometimes a unique animal for your child to pet. Next door, is the barn area with goats and sheep to pet, a koi tank, ducks, chickens, and even pony rides. The Underzone has tunnels for crawling and has an interesting moles on display in what looks like a giant ant farm. Birds Landing is an area for feeding different species of birds. All of these areas surround a playground with plenty of areas for your child to climb, crawl, and slide. The giant climbing web and turtle shells are some of our favorite!

The zoo is quickly becoming one of the top attractions in Dallas and provides a great learning environment for children. With the addition of the Hippo Outpost slated for 2017, the zoo continuously improves the experience for its guests. Dallas Dads enjoy each outing and find something new with each visit.
