Dads Tram it Out to Roosevelt Island

October 5, 2009 by Lance Somerfeld

One of our newest NYC Dads Group members, Ray D. (and daughter Josephine), blasted out this “guest blog” entry based on our recent excursion to Roosevelt Island…

Even though the weather was not the best, we still had a great turnout for our trip to Roosevelt Island. 14 dads with their offspring made the trip; some on the tram, others via the subway. The tram was stroller friendly, and just a quick five-minute jaunt over the East River. As we departed the tram onto the island, it was raining lightly as we made our way to the playground on the east side of the island. It is hard to imagine that you can be so close to Manhattan, but not hear the roar of the city! The young ones played on the playground equipment while their fathers looked on; they scaled an impressive rock-climbing wall and dared to zip down the slide. Those of us with babies hung out on the lawn and discussed the usual; what diapers and formula to use, teething tips, bedtime rituals, the usual stuff. Everyone seemed to be having a great time (even my daughter Josephine warmed up before we had to leave!!). I can not tell you enough how much it helps to be a member of a great group like this one. I look forward to next week!

If one opinion about our excursion is not enough, here are just a few of the testimonials from other dads who attended:

“With a swipe of a Metrocard, you’re on the island in less than 10 min. My 2-yr-old loved looking out the window and being so high above everything. Once there, it sprinkled on us a little but quickly blew over. The far playground had bleachers so we could comfortably keep an eye on the kids. My girl loved the little tunnel and the swinging chairs. There was another playground nearby that we could have explored if nap time hadn’t beckoned us home.”

“Nice to have a deserted playground all to ourselves without hordes of passers by gawking at the collection of dads and kids. “

“Nice change to feel so private in so public a setting. It was as if the Secret Service had arrived just before us to clear out everyone else because Sasha & Malia were about to use the swings. The tram ride added a nice novelty factor, even if was just for five minutes.”
