Dads Convention Only One Month Away: The Agenda

August 31, 2010 by Lance Somerfeld

The National At-Home Dads Convention presented by daddyshome.org will be on October 2-3 in Omaha, Nebraska. Matt S. & I are both planning to attend this year…to network & meet some other dads from around the country, do a bit of drinking, devour steak, and get educated from some of the interesting discussion sessions. Of course, it would be fantastic if we were joined by a few other dads from the NY Metro area.   If you are gun shy about making the trip this year, perhaps you will consider the 2011 convention slated to occur in Washington D.C.

For those dads considering the trek or those just interested in what will go on, here are some details on what you can expect:

Featured Keynote Presenters include:
1. Frank E. Bowers, Ph.D.
Supervising Psychologist
Boys Town Behavioral Health Clinic
Dr. Frank Bowers is a Supervising Psychologist at the Boys Town Behavioral Health Clinic, part of the Boys Town Community Support Services. Dr. Bowers works with children and their families, to identify and treat issues such as depression, anxiety, school problems and ADHD with the goal of helping children and families learn how to help themselves. He has presented and written numerous professional papers on topics of parenting and child development. He is currently authoring a book on parenting children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder due out in the spring of 2011. Dr. Bowers will share his passion for the role of father in his keynote, “The Most Important Job in the World.”

2 . Brian Reid
Founder of Rebeldad.com
Brian will discuss his research on the actual number of at home dads compared to the often quoted Census numbers.

Other presenters:

3. Lance Somerfeld (yours truly) & Matt Schneider
Organizers of NYC Dads Group
Lance & Matt will share ideas on how to start and grow a local dads group. The NYC Dads Group is the fastest growing at home dads group in the nation and has been covered by numerous media outlets.

4. Erin Cox, MS LMHP LPC
Therapist: Womens’ Therapy & Learning Center in Omaha, NE
Former Family Teacher at Boys Town
Erin’s workshop will teach discipline strategies, establishing routines, and how to build strong, healthy family relationships.

5. Rebecca Beaudoin
Registered Dietician, Trained Health Coach
Rebecca will give demonstrations on fun ideas for meals and snacks, how to involve kids in meal planning and assisting in meal preparation, and how to shop for organics.

Additional breakouts will include the ever popular “Age Based Open Discussion Groups”, Parenting with Confidence, Basic Hairstyling (Back by popular demand), and a few others we are still working on.

It’s not too late to register.  Check out the site for all of the details.
