‘Toddler Survival Guide’ Humors Parents Struggling with Demanding Little Kids

January 29, 2018 by Kevin McKeever Leave a Comment

Catering to a needy baby or toddler can turn any parent into a sleep-deprived, stressed out zombie. Maybe that’s all part of their evil plan?

Husband-and-wife team Mike and Heather Spohr try to help moms and dads stave off an invasion of the heart, mind and body by going through the funny bone with their new book, The Toddler Survival Guide: Complete Protection from the Whiny Unfed. The couple discusses their book and their own parenting experiences when they join City Dads Group columnist Whit Honea for chat on the latest edition of The Modern Dads Podcast.

The Toddler Survival Guide parodies Max Brooks’s The Zombie Survival Guide in explaining how parents can outlast and endure the Terrible Twos, Threatening Threes and more, both in the home and on those occasions you need to take them out in public.

“This is less about being a ‘how to’ and all about how to come out the other end of the Toddler Apocalypse with some of our humor intact knowing that we are not alone,” noted the Book Ink Reviews website, which gave the book a positive rating.

The Spohrs are old-school parenting bloggers. Heather oversees the still thriving The Spohrs are Multiplying, which she started in 2002, while Mike wrote The Newborn Identity. They gained national attention chronicling the birth and short life of first child, Madeline, who was born premature and died suddenly after 17 months. The tragedy led Heather to become a nationally recognized fundraiser for the March of Dimes, and the president and co-founder of Friends Of Maddie, a charitable organization that supports families after the death of a child.

Mike is now an editor at BuzzFeed, where he runs the Parents and Family vertical. Heather is a writer and the Los Angeles editor for the parenting website Mommy Nearest.
