‘Father’s Day Taken’ to Help Families that Lost Dads to Racism, Violence

Fathers day taken #fathersdaytaken ad campaign by Dove Men+Care

"Father's Day Taken," the latest pro-fatherhood fundraising initiative by our longtime partner Dove Men+Care, remembers the thousands of black dads who have lost their lives due to racism and violence, and the families left behind. DM+C established the the Fathers Day Taken Fund to invest $1 million to support these families in need. The movement began with the public airings of a video showing Minneapolis police on May 25 kneeling on the neck of George Floyd until he stopped breathing. Floyd was in the process of being arrested on a charge of passing a counterfeit $20 bill. The Father's … [Read more...]

Finding Zen of Fatherhood with a Hellhound on a Your Trail

June 16, 2020 by Guest Contributor Leave a Comment

running at daybreak through trees park

Running is my time to think about everything and, eventually, nothing. Finding Zen in those moments makes my early mornings stuffing lunch sacks through my late nights up with a sick kid, all worth while. It’s not that I run out of things to think about -- it's getting to that place where I am thinking solely about the NOW. How do my knees feel? Is that left calf loosing up or is it still tight and messing with my stride? Look, that lime green light seems to bounce off the pool of water next to the trail! I tend to be a reflective person by nature. Looking back and learning from my … [Read more...]

Virtual Fathers Eve Celebration Will Toast Fatherhood in 2020

fathers eve celebration in Franklin, TN in 2019

Fathers Eve -- the annual pre-Father’s Day celebration of the dad life -- will become Virtual Fathers Eve in 2020. The move to an online platform became necessary with the likelihood social distancing measures and limits on large gatherings will still be in place in many states due novel coronavirus concerns. "Even if everyone got the green light and all the governors and whatever opened up every place that could, I don't think people are quite ready to go back to big groups of people in close proximity," Fathers Eve founder and Twin Cities Dads Group co-organizer John Francis recently … [Read more...]

Father’s Day: Celebrate Masculinity Evolving, Dads’ Unique Roles

father daughter tea party challenges traditional masculinity ideas

“Is Father’s Day outdated?” That's what Mary Schmich, a columnist for the Chicago Tribune, asked in 2018. For me, the answer is a resounding “no.” As long as there are men, fathers will be relevant and worth celebrating. And, I don’t just mean “father” as though it were interchangeable with the word “parent.” A parent, in my view, can be of any gender or none at all. If you are willing and capable of taking on the responsibility of parenthood, you can be a parent. A parent’s responsibility is to educate, entertain, guide, protect, provide for and love their child. My success as a parent … [Read more...]

Fathers Celebrated for Mountains of Worthwhile Life Advice

June 12, 2019 by Vincent O'Keefe Leave a Comment

father helps son climb down mountain fathers

“Don’t be daft!” That’s one of the most memorable fatherly mantras from my childhood. It came courtesy of Jerry, the father of Tim, one of my best childhood buddies. I was lucky enough to grow up with about a dozen close friends, and Tim’s house was often our headquarters, thanks in part to his beloved father. At first, I didn’t know what “daft” meant. But since Jerry would usually bellow the words half-jokingly after some of our shenanigans, I learned it meant “foolish” or “silly.” Jerry died years ago, but his mantra returned recently as I packed for a trip to Folly Beach, S.C. That … [Read more...]
