Light Still Can Be Found Even Amid Darkness of These Times

September 23, 2020 by Guest Contributor 1 Comment

star light shines on man's face amid darkness

I’m gonna break character here and tell y'all something. Normally, I try to remain positive and affirmative and gentle, bordering on Pollyannaish, but some days I feel different, discordant … broken. The something I want to tell you seems obvious to me. These are dark fucking times. You may quote me. The news, honestly, breaks me often. The pain and suffering. The jingoism and economic imbalance. Pleas for money so our kids can fucking eat. Campaigns that say nothing of weight or promise and only attack with a ferocity that shears my soul. I go on Facebook -- the only social network I … [Read more...]

fresh start new routine schedule planner

EDITOR'S NOTE: City Dads Group is working with longtime partner Dove Men+Care to create “how to” videos for the grooming products company’s “Dads Care” campaign. This one features Aaron Sheldon of our Columbus (Ohio) Dads Group, with a little help from his son, Harry, both shown above, talking about how to help kids with autism cope with a change in routine. I've spent the past few years sharing how Harry and I explore our everyday world, and, lately, how our world has changed since Harry's Autism diagnosis. Thanks to an … [Read more...]

hand reaching out of ocean for help

I remember sitting in my therapist’s office after I learned I was going to be a father. I had overwhelming feelings of fear, wonder, powerlessness, joy, fearfulness, gratitude and defensiveness. As I discussed these emotions with my therapist, I couldn’t help but think about the struggles the men in my life have had being fathers. Alcoholism. Sex addiction. Unfaithfulness. Abuse. Anger. Divorce. Brokenness. The examples I had around me as fathers were men who said things but didn’t follow through. They meant well but their actions showed something different. My therapist then shared … [Read more...]

After Election, Our Children Can’t Be Distracted from Hope

November 9, 2016 by Guest Contributor 1 Comment

hope among the ruins

Editor's Note: The presidential victory of Republican Donald Trump, an upset that surprised the pundits, had many parents openly fretting online about their children's future this morning. Guest columnist Bill Peebles was one of them, and he offers this insight and strategy. My 11-year-old sons will be home from school soon. We discussed the presidential election this morning. They seemed a little stunned, but I was glad to see they weren't frightened. They may come home that way, though. I imagine different scenarios. What I might say to a kid who asks if everything will be OK; who … [Read more...]
