Basketball Court of Opinion: The Game is Only Part of It

March 14, 2018 by Whit Honea Leave a Comment

“Just let them play,” I said, loudly. “That’s a good idea,” snapped the referee, staring me down from the baseline. I was in the front row, mid-court, and everything was a blur save the anger on his face and the echoing whispers of my wife begging me to stay quiet. She was probably right. A moment earlier, the crowd buzzing with confusion, I had turned to those seated behind me, a collection of parents from both teams, and shared my feelings on the call that had been made. I had been loud then, too. It was the 6th grade boys basketball championship. A player on my son’s team had just … [Read more...]

With March comes madness -- the college basketball tournament kind -- and City Dads Group members were there to witness it again this year, thanks to our longtime partner, Dove Men+Care. The men's grooming products brand once again gave a few of our members and their children in select cities the opportunity to attend a few games during the run to the annual NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship. The hook? Dove Men+Care's latest twist on its long-running "Real Strength" tag line -- the Real Strength Manifesto, a call for fans as well as those on the court to exhibit both passion for … [Read more...]

Male Friendship, Basketball and “Bonds of Real Strength”

March 18, 2016 by Kevin McKeever Leave a Comment

Bonds of Real Strength Ollie Calhoun

There will be wings. There will be beers. There will be lots of yelling when someone misses a crucial late-game free throw. Most all, when members from City Dads Group chapters all around the country get together tonight for NCAA men's college basketball viewing parties, there will be many bonding moments. In other words, male friendship. Thanks, Dove Men+Care. This is appropriate as the men's grooming products company, our partner for a third straight year in hosting "March Madness" viewing parties for our more than 5,000 members, recently commissioned the "Bonds of Real Strength" … [Read more...]

March Madness Sweeps City Dads Nation

March 20, 2015 by Kevin McKeever 2 Comments

nyc dads dove march madness empire

City Dads Groups across the country came together last night to get mad for March Madness. Dove Men+Care graciously sponsored events to let fathers get out of the house for the evening and into the start of the nation's biggest college basketball tournament. Here are reports and photos from our members: “You really need to be a part of this.” At one point I thought I’d have to pry the pizza slices and pint glasses from the hands of our dads to get them to “bring it in” for a group picture. The magnetism of the conversations taking place around the room was a strong draw; the … [Read more...]

Pro Athletes and Toddlers: 7 Ways They are Exactly Alike

August 25, 2014 by Lorne Jaffe Leave a Comment

boy with baseball pro athletes and toddlers

You wouldn't think it to look at them, but our favorite professional baseball, basketball, football, hockey and soccer players have a ton in common with wee toddlers. How so? Let us count the ways? 1) Pro Athletes and Toddlers: They all want the damn ball.Almost immediately following his rookie season, former football player Keyshawn Johnson, stirred quite the controversy when he published an autobiography titled Just Give Me The Damn Ball in which he called one teammate a “mascot” and complained that his then team, the New York Jets, didn't throw the ball his way enough. Many sportswriters … [Read more...]
