Last summer, Lance and I got to talking seriously about starting a few dads groups outside of New York City. One of our members, Johnny Chung, had moved to Los Angeles and was eager to get a group going there. Separately, a toy company we were working with in NYC asked us for the names of dads group organizers in Chicago and Los Angeles. Rather than give him names, we told him we would organize the Meetups in all three cities. And thus, LA Dads Group and Chicago Dads Group were born one year ago today.
The LA Dads Group story is pretty straightforward. We partnered Johnny up with two other dads we had met along the way, Trevor Mulligan of OneSAHD and Zach Rosenberg of 8BitDad, and they launched their Meetup site on July 31, 2013.
One year later, they’ve welcomed 278 dads into the group and hosted nearly 100 Meetups at playgrounds, swimming pools and beaches all over the Los Angeles metro area.
In Chicago, we found an existing dads Meetup group and partnered with it’s founder, Richard Owens, to start Chicago Dads Group.
One year later, they’ve welcomed 256 dads into the group and are hosting 4-5 Meetups every week in parks, playgrounds and bars (Dads Night Out) all over Chicagoland. Richard has been joined by a co-organizer Brian Dykes and eight event organizers that have stepped up to plan Meetups.
Congratulations and thank you to the teams behind LA Dads Group and Chicago Dads Group on a GREAT first year!
