ADHD, Dyslexia Helped Jonathan Oliver be a Better Dad, Man

June 17, 2019 by Kevin McKeever Leave a Comment

When life throws you curve balls … well, you learn to smack ’em out of the park.

That seems to be a key to success for Jonathan Oliver has found in his journey from college where, after graduating high school with honors, he learned he had dyslexia to his current status as a personal development coach, motivational speaker, author and at-home dad.

Oliver, also known as “J.O.,” joins this latest edition of The Modern Dads Podcast to talk about marriage, at-home fatherhood, and his new book, To the Little Boy in Me: Learning with Dyslexia & ADHD. In the conversation, he discusses the partnership he and his wife have created, the importance of having and being a mentor, community and the important message he wants to send to other people with learning challenges.

A Texas native who now resides in Oklahoma with his wife and two daughters, Oliver was a pre-med major when he received his dyslexia diagnosis during junior year after having to try to pass genetics for the third time. He taught himself  how to learn, creating his own strategies to cope with his disability.

Then, at age 30, Oliver was diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD. While many would consider these conditions a negative, he believes they are gifts that have taught him important lessons and strategies that have led him to success.

In addition to To the Little Boy in Me, he has written two other books: Joy In The Journey: 1st Year Chronicles From A Stay At Home Dad, and Impersonations, a book about his own journey through the divorce of his parents, dyslexia, addiction, and spirituality. He is the founder of Higher Enlightenment – a personal development coaching company dedicated to providing spiritual and intelligent insight with the goal of helping people believe in themselves and soar through their fears and hurdles. Oliver is also an occasional guest columnist for City Dads Group.
