Editor’s Note: Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis is a local hot spot for year-round family fun, such as this recent cool and creamy event, we write about as our celebration of “Summer in Our City Dads Group Cities” continues.
Indianapolis is obviously known for being the Racing Capital of the World for the annual Indy 500, and I’ll get there, but let me start downtown.
That’s right, Downtown Indy is happening. There is something for here for every member of your family: restaurants, shops, food trucks, events.
Monument Circle is called true heart of Downtown Indianapolis. Often filled with life on the lunch hour or during one of the many events that happen year round, it’s truly a must-see for anyone visiting the Circle City. Check out the observation deck at the top of Soldiers and Sailors Monument. Admission is free if you walk the stairs or $2 to take the elevator ($1 for kids age 6 – 18).
Recently, the kids and I took advantage of the Ice Cream Social on Monument Circle. A portion of the circle was blocked off and local celebs were dishing ice cream. The event was held by the American Dairy Association of Indiana and all the proceeds went to the Girls Scouts of Indiana. Not only did my kids have fun, but they got to see exactly where their ice cream is coming from. There were live cows, activities, music, face painting, and did I mention ice cream?
It was definitely a fun event and one that we attend yearly. What better way to celebrate National Ice Cream Month? The American Dairy Association of Indiana has a great slogan that fits Indy: “Winners Drink Milk.” I guess in this case we eat it, and it is tasty!
