Most of us in the dad blogging world have heard about the passing of Oren Miller, founder of the 1,100-member Dad Bloggers Facebook Group and one of the most respected figures in our community. Though I did not know Oren personally, as a Dad Blogger myself, I have read many of the tributes to him these past two weeks and I can really see how he was so dear to his family and friends. He was beloved.
I find it moving that his friends poured their hearts out to keep his memory alive and comfort each other. But the most telling thing about how much they loved and respected the man is not in their words but in their actions.
Just days after Oren lost his nine-month battle with lung cancer, his friends gave him the greatest honor they could think of: They reignited a campaign and petition he supported to convince online retailer Amazon and to re-brand its Amazon Mom savings program as “Amazon Family.”
Oren couldn’t understand why the Amazon Mom savings program was open to practically everyone who was helping raise a family yet, in name, the company failed recognize the contributions of fathers or anyone else. Even worse, the program was already known as “Amazon Family” in many other countries. Why did the online retailer recognize the entire family in places like England and Germany but not here at home?
Oren didn’t see it as a contest between mom and dad, and this I find inspiring. Family is family whether you’re a mom, dad, grandpa, grandma, gay, straight or anyone else doing the most important job in the world – raising children. But Oren also saw his fellow online dads as family. The brothers who shared their lives and concerns with each other online. They were his family and he was theirs. So they are keeping his memory alive by carrying on his work and continuing to love and support each other.
Oren Miller, who was only 42 when he died, leaves behind a wife and two beautiful children. But he also leaves behind a brotherhood of guys he loved like family, too. His soul and influence has made so many lives richer and I think our community is a thousand times closer because of him.
