Back in June, before the school day begins, my daughter is writing in her diary. I take a peek because I'm curious and often she keeps it pretty secret. It's got a little lock and everything. Usually it has things in it like a portrait of herself with her name under it and on the top of the page the musing, "I love me." Or one whole page covered corner to corner by the lone exclamation, "My brother is CRAZY!" I take a lot of peeks. She leaves the key around. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey is something I could have used as a kid. There was very little direction in my house and I just drifted from class to class in high school. If you pictured my life as The Breakfast Club, I was Brian. The difference was, while he got too much direction and pressure from his parents, I didn’t get enough. Almost seven years ago I became a father. I still remember the swelling mix of feelings – love, pride, exhaustion and fear amongst others. I remember, vaguely, getting the car to pick up my daughter and my wife. My daughter. I was a father. Oh, boy. The hospital stay was nice. Cozy. It was like Diet Parenting.
