A Winning Combination of Music and Art at Moonsoup

October 21, 2010 by Guest Contributor

This week’s guest blog entry comes from occasional contributor, Edward Drossman.  Below is his synopsis of his daddy & me trial class with the NYC Dads Group at Moonsoup:

I like to introduce my toddler Zachary to art and music classes, but I thought that would require me to sign my son up for a music class as well as an art class. Well, that was the misconception until I took my son to a MoonSoup trial class with the NYC Dads Group at the Trinity Luther Church building on Wednesday morning. An added attraction of the class is that it is convenient for upper West Siders and a very short trip for my son and I.

The up tempo morning of fun opened with child favorite songs and instruments as well. There were shakers, pom-poms (yes, the dads & kids were shaking them) and even a big drum that my son banged…and even decided to climbed on (see above picture of this which I took on my iPhone). Following this was the child favorite parachute and of course bubble popping time which always seem to go well together with the parachute.

One of the problems I have with a lot of music classes is that the instructors think they are rock stars or Broadway worthy…and kids need to stay away from them. This wasn’t the case at MoonSoup as the instructors were approachable and friendly and didn’t have that crass rock star mentality.

Following the music time and parachute/bubble popping there was a segue into art time. This was the sensory art activity to get messy and Zacky did, but don’t worry, the paint that was used for the masterpieces (butterfliess) the kids created completely washed out. Additionally, we were handed cans of shaving cream to spray all over the art table for the children to spread around with their paint brushes.  It got everywhere!  One dad joked that they would smell like shaving cream for the rest of the day!  I often hear how important it is to develop a music and art appreciation in our children and now thanks to MoonSoup, I know I can go to one place for the winning combination of both. This was truly an enjoyable experience for my son Zachary and I.  For other dads in the NYC Dads Group interested in Moonsoup, they are offering a special dads only 10% savings on enrollment!
